Iowa Department of Education - Secondary Transition

The Iowa Department of Education has valuable information on the background for post secondary transition services in Iowa. This can be found online at:

This link also provides a direct link to download a PDF version of the Support for Accommodations Request (SAR) which most Iowa colleges and universities use as a primary source of information to guide post secondary learning accommodations. This document (the SAR) is completed by a Special Education Teacher prior to exit from special education services. In post secondary learning settings (colleges, community colleges, universities, etc.), students are expected to advocate for themselves by contacting their college's disability services coordinator to request reasonable accommodations, and the SAR helps tell that coordinator what accommodations the student has previously received for his/her disability.

STRIVE

STRIVE is a support program for secondary vocational education that is jointly administered by Des Moines Area Community College (Ankeny Campus) and Heartland Area Education Agency 11. STRIVE assists high school special education students in the transition from high school to a vocational program at DMACC. STRIVE students are referred by their local high school staffing teams to receive vocational instruction from DMACC instructors and academic support from the STRIVE staff. Students referred to STRIVE must have completed all of their high school credits and must have an IEP with a vocational training goal.

Wright's Law

Wright's Law is a massive resource on special education, 504 (disability) Plans, and other legal issues. Below is a link to a free flyer that has links to information about rights for students with disabilities, as well as other links with information on planning/prep for college and success in college.
Help for College Students with Disabilities
(You'll note that the flyer linked above refers to 504 plans, not IEPs. As you may already know, an IEP is an educational right that ends with completion of a regular HS diploma or at age 21, but accommodations for a disability--usually listed in Accommodations on the IEP or on a 504 plan--are a civil right that could continue throughout college and career.)
